The deckpod on the Tiki 46 is not made for living in – it’s just supposed to be a watch berth for long voyages. Well, Jeff and I have given the girls the 3 staterooms since we’re such pushovers, and we live in the deckpod. Granted, we’ve widened it from the original plans, but it’s still small. And there are no opening windows. We’ve already put dinghy hatches in at Jeffs foot of the bed along beam 5, and another along the mast case, but neither provides the kind of ventilation that Jeff needs. Today, we installed a hatch over his side of the bed. We’ll see how that works.

Using a jig saw and a circular saw, Jeff cuts out the deck pod roof

Hmmmm…Looks kind of bright in the bedroom. I hope that it doesn’t get too hot now!

I epoxied the edges of the opening, and after drying Jeff places the hardware for the hatch.

All finished. Since we just spotted a tornado off to the west of us we’ll soon find out if it’s watertight!

  • Hi Jeff and Sue,
We’re building T46 #38. We have 2 boys, Dante and Jonah. They are now 8 and 7 years old, respectively. They eat like horses and they haven’t even gone through puberty yet. Tess and I fear for our planned cruising budget. The one bright spot is that Dante, who has been on Peace IV several times, has declaimed far and wide that the deck pod belongs to him and none other. That leaves plently of room for the rest of us.
By the way, we love your blog.

  • Hi
I’m so good at getting on the computer everyday and checking out blogs. NOT! I think I’ve been on the computer about 6 times since we left Ishmael. How long are you planning on staying in Marathon. We are hoping to be back to the boat by early September. Ben can’t wait to get back. Are you still planning on heading to P.R.? Email, I might even read it sometime soon. lol

  • I think that the hatch will help a lot. The used boat stuff shop here in Palm Beach has several like larger new Lewmar hatches, cheap, should you want more or bigger. Also the wind scoops will really help funnel air inside. Someone with your skills can surely fabricate one, but here is one I saw on ebay.(Looking for cheap stuff for my own boat) Enjoy the summer, it ends in October +or-. By September I question my sanity for living here. In November I remember. David

  • Hi Bob!
My oldest daughter wanted the deck pod also, but we nixed that idea right away. Hmmm … a teenage girl able to sneak off a boat while her parents sleep blissfully down below. Not happenin’!

  • Hi David,
I’ve been looking at how other people have the windscoops rigged and it’s going to take some doing to put one up on the pod with no rigging overhead to support it. (We’ve taken everything down in preparation for the BIG ONE…) But the new hatch is wonderful – I’ve actually felt a little chilly the past two nights! We were worried about it being too small – but because the roof has wooden supports in it for future rigging changes we were limited in size. I’m happy though. And yes, we question our sanity on staying here. People try to tell me you get used to it….

  • tornado!! wow. be careful! i miss yall so much.. i cant even explain how hard it is to not see yall and know that we most likely wont this winter… no bahamas after all. :\ so i guess we’ll have to meet up somewhere sooner or later.. wish i could see you and all of the boat kids again :]

  • Sue, the saying is that folks who can afford to leave sfth FL in the summer say it’s unbearable, those who can’t say aw it’s not that bad. Also folks who work inside and go fro ac to ac don’t mind it as much. Last week we were finishing off the interior n a sportfishing yacht and the owner was here from So Cal. He said he kinda likes the heat it doesn’t bother him. The next day he spent vacuuming his boat and doing some mild cleaning. At 3:00 he came to me and said he was cooked and near death, maybe heat stroke. It’s different playing than working.
Glad your hatch is working well. You can support a wind funnel with a bow that is sewn into the fabric. The increase in airflow is impressive. David

  • Hey David,
I didn’t think about a bow. That would work well with how the Tiki’s hatches are designed.

Jeff is in Phoenix right now – 101 degrees to our 87. But he’s in 15% humidity to our 76%. He thinks it’s not quite as “soggy” and therefore a little more comfortable. We lived in AZ for 4.5 years and never had AC. We simply opened all the windows at night for the cold air and then shut them up along with all the shades during the day. That doesn’t work here where there is very little temperature difference.

  • Annakah! No Bahamas? Well, Christie and probably Jaimie will be spending a lot of time in South Carolina so perhaps we can work some kind of visit out

  • Hi Sue,
Dante just read your response and stated, “I would NEVER try to sneak off the boat at night while you and Mama were sleeping!”. Dante says I should trust him…mmm . Why do I feel like I’m being played….??

  • Ahhh..innocence. They are all so cute when they’re young. :D
